Instructors

Experienced coaches who prioritise safety

Our teaching team combines martial arts credentials with experience coaching adult beginners. Every instructor completes internal standardisation before leading a cohort alone.

Mei Lin Koh coaching knee strikes during a women's self-defence session

Lead Instructor

Mei Lin Koh

Mei Lin holds a third-degree black belt in Kyokushin karate and a diploma in sports coaching from Republic Polytechnic. She designed the Women's Safety Lab syllabus and leads all women-only intakes. Her teaching emphasises calm voice control and realistic exit routes rather than flashy techniques.

Raj Anand supervising close-quarters scenario drills with protective gear

Senior Instructor

Raj Anand

Raj is a former competitive judoka who transitioned to practical self-defence instruction after a decade in facilities management — a background that informs his attention to environmental hazards in training spaces. He leads Scenario Response and co-teaches Urban Foundations on weekday evenings.

Raj is certified in first aid and AED use. He conducts quarterly safety audits of studio equipment and documents incident-near-miss reviews for continuous improvement.

Sarah Teo leading a foundations class through stance and footwork drills

Foundations Coach

Sarah Teo

Sarah specialises in first-time students who feel nervous about contact. She trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai before completing our internal instructor development track. Her classes spend extra time on consent cues between partners and how to tap out or pause drills.

Sarah also coordinates private coaching bookings and trial class orientations. She is usually the first person to reply to email enquiries during business hours.

How we select and train instructors

SelfGuard Pro does not hire instructors based on competition trophies alone. Candidates complete a practical assessment covering emergency stops, partner care, and clear communication under noise. They shadow senior coaches for at least twenty hours before receiving a class assignment. Continuing education includes scenario updates when local safety guidance changes and annual first-aid recertification.

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward discriminatory language or unsanctioned contact during training. Students can raise concerns confidentially via [email protected] or speak with any lead instructor after class.
