Practical training without macho theatre

SelfGuard Pro opened in 2022 to offer adults in Singapore a calm, structured place to learn self-defence — not sport fighting, not military cosplay, and not fear-based marketing.

Why we exist

The founders — former corporate professionals who trained martial arts recreationally — noticed a gap in the market. Many self-defence offerings either resembled competitive gyms with intimidating cultures, or one-off seminars that left participants unsure how to practise afterward. SelfGuard Pro was designed as a middle path: recurring classes with written syllabi, instructors who explain the reasoning behind each drill, and pricing published upfront.

We rent a dedicated studio on Keong Saik Road rather than sharing floor time with unrelated sports. That choice increases our costs but lets us control mat layout, music volume, and privacy for women-only cohorts. We are an independent studio; we do not franchise our name or sell instructor certifications to third parties.

Teaching philosophy

Our philosophy rests on four principles that appear in every program document:

  1. Awareness before action. Most conflicts can be avoided or de-escalated if you notice early signals and position yourself near exits. We drill observation exercises as seriously as strikes.
  2. Simple techniques, repeated correctly. Under stress, fine motor skills degrade. We prefer a small toolkit performed well over a catalogue of moves you cannot recall.
  3. Consent and control in partner work. Students agree on contact levels before each drill. Anyone may stop immediately without explanation.
  4. Honest limitations. Self-defence training improves options; it does not make anyone invulnerable. We say so plainly in marketing and in class.

Safety and compliance

Every session starts at reception: students confirm they have completed the health questionnaire, wrap hands or put on gloves as required, and listen to a two-minute safety briefing. All instructors hold valid first-aid certification. We maintain incident logs, insurance for studio operations, and equipment inspection records.

Minors are not admitted to adult programs; we refer families to youth-specific providers instead. SelfGuard Pro complies with Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act for student records. We do not sell contact lists or share enrolment data with advertisers. See our Privacy Policy for details.
