Why train with us

Self-defence that respects your time and your body

Most people who search for self-defence courses in Singapore are not looking to become fighters. They want a clear plan for uncomfortable moments — someone standing too close on an empty walkway, a persistent stranger at a bus stop, or the split second when a situation shifts from awkward to threatening. SelfGuard Pro was built around that reality. We teach adults who may never have stepped on a mat before, and we assume you have work commitments, family responsibilities, and a preference for training that feels purposeful rather than theatrical.

Our curriculum blends three layers that reinforce each other. The first layer is situational awareness: reading environments, managing distance, and using posture and voice before contact becomes necessary. The second layer covers fundamental physical skills — stable stance, safe falling, palm-heel strikes, knee strikes, and releases from common grabs — practised with partners under controlled conditions. The third layer applies those skills in short scenarios that mirror realistic contexts, always with safety protocols and debriefs so you understand why a technique worked or did not.

Guard stance and urban awareness

Every SelfGuard Pro student begins with a solid defensive guard — hands up, chin tucked, weight balanced — the same posture you see in our drills and the foundation for blocking, striking, and creating space. From there we layer urban awareness: reading lift lobbies, MRT platforms, and late-night streets without panic.

Singapore is generally safe, yet dense city life creates specific pressure points: narrow corridors, crowded nightlife districts, and long commutes after dark. Our instructors reference local environments without fear-mongering. You will practise exiting confined spaces, maintaining visibility in crowds, and communicating firmly in English and simple Mandarin phrases where useful.

Self-defence class practising controlled kicks on wall mats in the training studio
Our Keong Saik Road studio — matted floors, mirrors, and space for partner drills.

Our studio

A dedicated space on Keong Saik Road

SelfGuard Pro operates from a fourth-floor studio at 22 Keong Saik Road, #04-06, Singapore 089128. The space is fitted with impact-absorbing wall mats, mirrored panels for form correction, and a separate briefing area for theory segments. Showers and lockers are available; please bring indoor training shoes or train barefoot as directed by your instructor.

We are a few minutes on foot from Outram Park MRT interchange, which makes evening classes accessible from the Central Business District and the west side of the island. Street parking is limited in the Keong Saik conservation area; we recommend public transport where possible and publish detailed directions on our contact page.

Students often ask whether prior martial arts experience is required. It is not. We assess each cohort individually and pair beginners with patient partners during contact drills. If you have trained before, instructors will help you unlearn sport habits that do not translate to self-defence — such as waiting for a referee or engaging longer than necessary to escape.
